In this critical post-holiday period, Hawaii Blood Bank is appealing to first-time donors to step up and save a life - or three. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.

The local blood bank kicked off National Blood Donor Month in Windward with drives at Kaneohe Hope Chapel and Kailua Town Center and at Castle Medical Center Jan. 10, when much-needed pints were collected and processed from donors.

Traditionally the life-giving fluid is in short supply in January, officials say.

Hawaii has about 27,000 donors giving an average of two pints per year. But that’s way below what’s needed, said HBB marketing director Maura Dolormente.

“With the Islands having a higher transient populous than other states,” Dolormente said, “we need about 7,000 new first-time donors - and the loyalty of our regular donors - to meet the needs of Hawaii’s patients.” More area drives are coming up this month, including Jan. 14 at Kahuku High School, Jan. 17 at Laie Shopping Center and Jan. 22 at St. Ann’s Church.
