Buzz’s Original Steak House has decided to give back to the community for its 50th anniversary by donating $50,000 to local charities, many located in the Windward area.

Although they are used to hosting large parties for many of their milestone anniversaries at the Lanikai landmark, restaurant owners Stan and Bobby Lou Yeackel decided giving locally made more sense this year.

“Turning 50 feels great; it has gotten better every year and seems to move forward each year,” said Stan Yeackel. “We’ve demonstrated we’re willing to put money toward the community, because the community has supported us for so many years. In the past we’ve had parties and invited our customers down for pupus and an open house, but this year we wanted to do something different.”

One beneficiary is Lanikai Elementary School, which had problems with its art program because of a broken kiln. The restaurant’s $5,000 gift will be used to replace the kiln.

Other charities include Lanikai Association, LaniKailua Outdoor Circle, Boys & Girls Club Windward Clubhouse, Windward Seniors Day Care Center, Daughters of Hawaii and Hospice Hawaii.

In addition, all proceeds from the sale of Buzz’s annual calendar go to Hawaii Foodbank. To order a calendar, visit buzzssteakhouse.com/lanikai.htm.

The Yeackels seem content with where Buzz’s is after a half century, and they’re happy about it, according to Stan.

“We’re getting a bit older, so we don’t want to expand or do anything too different. We just try to make it as good as we can and leave it with the kids to run at some point.”
