A new landscaping business is getting back to basics.

Carbon Zero Aina dedicates itself to health, beauty and energy independence while avoiding the nuisance and noise that spews from gaspowered mowers and lawn equipment.

The business has been primarily servicing the Kailua area since opening in July, and it uses no power equipment, chemicals or insecticides. Carbon Zero Aina takes a traditional approach to yard maintenance an idea owner Scott Gibson had when he was still living on the Mainland.

“I was working for an environmentally friendly company, and when I came to Hawaii I took a look around and saw the way landscaping was being handled here,” Gibson said. “I decided to give this a try and offer a service to people who wanted a more environmentally friendly way to take care of their property.”

Its quiet, hand-powered tools and equipment cover all aspects of yard care. “With all our customers, we’ve had to do a massive cleanup, because the lawn-service companies that people were hiring weren’t doing yard maintenance they were simply coming out, mowing the lawn and then leaving.

“When we get done, the properties look right.”

Old-fashioned reel mowers, hand clippers, rakes, push brooms, stainless steel hedge trimmers and edging tools are all in its inventory. Although costs do run about 30 percent higher than the average yard service companies, Gibson points to his quality work output and finish.

“It is so labor-intensive, but the results are amazing. With the real mowers, you get a much cleaner cut. Instead of nylon cords that are on weed wackers, we use stainless steel blades, so the cut is more precise and healthier, and the grass is considerably greener than when we started.”

Carbon Zero Aina also disposes of lawn waste and clippings properly, as all their customers have allowed them to set up a composting system. “We like to turn yard waste into as much clean-quality compost as we possibly can.”
