Ohana Arts Fall Festival of Music brings the creation of the world to Paliku Theatre this weekend, and all you have to do is sit back and listen.
The double bill of Milhaud’s La Creation Du Monde (The Creation of the World) and Poulenc’s one-act, onewoman chamber opera La Voix Humaine(The Human Voice) are booked for 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday. The first program features the Momenta String Quartet with pianist Djordje Nesic; the second part showcases the voice of New Yorkbased mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin. She will share the emotional journey of a woman as she talks on the phone to her lover who will marry another woman the next day. Project Runway‘s Austin Scarlett did the costumes.
“We are doing this for Hawaii’s communities, to provide access to highcaliber educational and professional arts programs,” said Rubin, the artistic director and cofounder of Ohana Arts.
Other concerts are at Nov. 1 at HPU downtown, Nov. 3 at UH Orvis Auditorium and Nov. 4 at HPR’s Atherton Studio. It played Oct. 30 at Chaminade.
Rubin has performed before in Hawaii at smaller venues. According to her website, she enjoys smaller sites because they “create a sense of intimacy she can appreciate in a special way, since she has been blind since birth.”
Tickets cost $20 and $15. To reserve seats, call Ohana Arts at 1-800-8383006.
Now in its second season, Ohana Arts trains youths ages 8-18 in performing arts and theater production and collaborates with colleges and music professionals to expose the public to the world’s celebrated classical music.
