World-renowned marine biologist Mary Hagedorn will address the Kaneohe Business Group at its monthly luncheon, set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 23 in Pohai Nani’s second floor meeting room. Her topic: “Conserving coral reefs makes good business sense for Hawaii.”

Hagedorn earned her Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and has worked with the Smithsonian Institution as a research scientist for 17 years. She’s also worked in exotic locales in the Amazon and Africa as a marine physiologist.

Her work led her to study cryobiology, or the study of cells under ultra-cold conditions. She also created the first genome repository for endangered coral species - an effort that could help replenish coral reefs throughout the world.

In 2000, Hagedorn received the George E. Burch Fellowship in Theoretic Medicine and Affiliated Theoretic Sciences, and was nominated for the 2005 Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation.

Lunch reservations ($15) are due Feb. 21 to Joel Kurosaki at 520-1565 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
