Following weekend recycling drives and a “haunted asylum,” Kalaheo High School’s Project Grad next turns to the ocean for fundraising help by sponsoring a canoe race for crews of six and single paddlers.

The Project Graduation Challenge will start at 9 a.m. Dec. 10 at Kailua Beach Park, with paddlers embarking on a 5-mile course around Flat Island. High school and master’s divisions are slated for the race, which will help subsidize the 2012 Project Grad party for seniors. Fee is $120 for six paddlers and $25 for one, including lunch and awards.

Registration is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kailua Canoe Club halau at the beach park. Race day registration is $140 and $30.
