Enchanted Lake and Heeia elementary schools recently joined Hokulani in East Oahu as Hawaii’s Blue Ribbon Schools now in the running for 2012 national recognition. Frito-Lay of Hawaii also gave each school a $3,000 cash award.
* Enchanted Lake has 430 students in grades K-6 and is noted for nurturing confident, self-directed learners who excel in problem solving. Under the direction of principal Pua McElhaney, partnerships have become the backbone of support in fundraising and giving children a variety of experiences, clubs and activities.
Its vision statement: “Ensure a high level of learning for every student.”
* Heeia has 404 students and until recently was guided by principal Dwight Uetake. Generations of families have attended the school on Haiku Road near Windward Mall, and alumni return here to work and teach using a wide variety of strategies to reach and encourage children with varied abilities. Heeia’s faculty is known for closely monitoring and analyzing progress, and offers additional support to those who fall behind and for teachers who need help as well. As a result, the school raised its math assessment score by 17.1 percent over last year, and its reading score by 8.6 percent.
Vision statement: “Soaring toward excellence, an adventure in learning.”
