Windward Community College’s chemistry forums are the answer to that ubiquitous question students ask, “Why do we have to learn this? When will we ever use it in real life?” The free forums invite students and the public to hear experts speak on chemistry-related topics that pertain to relevant contemporary issues.

Set for 2 p.m. Nov. 23 in Hale ‘Imiloa 111 is “Hawaii Algae Opportunities.” Kuehnle AgroSystems’ staff scientist and aquaculture product development manager Vasumathi Kode and co-founder and president Heidi Kuehnle will discuss microalgae as it relates to aquaculture, specialty bioproducts, greenhouse gas mitigation and biofuels, and its potential for Hawaii’s economy. Also to be addressed is their nutritional value, impact as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel, and the technical and financial challenges that microalgae companies face.

WCC presents several chemistry forums each semester on timely topics such as solar energy, tsunamis and landslides, crime investigation and the impact of drug use on the brain. For more information, call 236-9120.
