Residents are asked to be alert, again, for suspicious activity in the Waimanalo farming community.

The latest incident, reported by Roger Corrales, farm manager of the University of Hawaii Experimental Station on Ahiki Street, involves the theft of six brass valves in addition to a damaged 3-inch pipe valve. Corrales said the valve was “yanked out,” causing a strong gush of water that flowed undetected for up to seven hours.

Clifford Migita, president of Waimanalo Agricultural Association, also acknowledged recent incidents.

“Last weekend a nursery was hit,” he told the Windward Islander Oct. 26. “They took bags of media worth $500 and 3-gallon pots. And a police report was filed on some missing mangoes, since yard entry was involved.”

WAA represents most area farmers, whose rural lots aren’t readily visible to each other or from the road. It formed in 1995 to address increasing crime rates and now works with Gay Minton of the community policing team.

Witnesses should call 911 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
