As lawmakers tinker with No Child Left Behind policy on the federal level, Castle High feeder schools celebrate their achievement as one of the top DOE complexes to meet the NCLB standards during 2010-2011.

Led by Lea Albert, superintendent of the CastleKahuku Complex schools, the team will host its firstever town hall meeting from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Hale Akoakoa building at WCC. For more information, call 233-5700.

These area schools have achieved AYP (adequate yearly progress) for the second straight year, moving out of NCLB sanctions and into good standing: Hauula, Kahaluu and Ben Parker Elementary and King Intermediate. Waiahole already has good standing. (In the Kailua-Kalaheo Complex, Keolu and Blanche Pope elementary earned good standing.)

“This represents a great deal of hard work by faculty and staff, and great leadership,” Albert said, noting that her district is “blessed because the teachers are committed to excellence and they want their students to succeed.”

At Monday’s meeting, principals will discuss campus triumphs, and the public will be invited to help build in this positive momentum.

“We want to promote initiatives to reduce gender gaps, increase family engagement and unite the schools so that everybody is responsible for preparing students,” Albert explained.

Renowned author and educator Abigail James will discuss gender gaps and how to help boys achieve more. James is an expert on male brain development and has strategies for overcoming stumbling blocks for boys in the classroom.
