Transportation officials and SSFM International will lead two charettes, or community conversations, about the 1990 plan to improve Kahekili Highway, which was built in 1966 by the city.

The goal is public input to help the state Department of Transportation in filing its re-evaluation report on the 21-year-old EIS for the busy 4.4-mile artery that connects Kahaluu and parts north with Likelike Highway. Factors that may affect the plan: The EIS was completed before H-3 opened, and possible changes in Kaneohe population trends. Improvements were planned in 1990 to relieve congestion and connect to the regional transportation network.

The charettes are from 5 to 9 p.m. in Windward Community College’s Hale Akoakoa campus center. Part I is tonight (Nov. 2) “to discuss the project’s purpose and need as well as the KahekiliLikelike interchange.” Part II is Nov. 8 and is designed as a workshop on Kahekili alternatives from Haiku Road to Kamehameha Highway (near Hygienic Store). This is the only section that remains only two lanes. Both meetings provide refreshments.

Some parts of the plan have been accomplished Pookela Street as a connector road from Castle Hills to Keaahala Road by WCC; a signalized intersection at Kahekili-Likelike; the widening of Kahekili from Haiku Road to Likelike, and landscaping of that same corridor.
