Speakers and exhibits will highlight a public geothermal summit, set for 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Bellows Air Force Station.
Coordinated by state Sen. Pohai Ryan (D-Kailua to Hawaii Kai), the free program features a panel of experts from three geothermal companies as well as Hawaiian Electric Co. vice president Scott Seu and Big Island farmer Richard Ha. They also will provide informational exhibits.
“It’s time we start looking into sources of renewable energy, such as geothermal,” said Ryan, who noted that her effort on the summit was prompted by constituents who wanted to learn more about geothermal in particular. “It will be an excellent opportunity for people to gain insight on how it would impact their families and their livelihood.”
Mililani Trask will discuss Innovations Development Group, which nurtures globally collaborative projects that respect native cultures from here to New Zealand and beyond. Ted Peck of Ku’oko’a has a plan to free the state economy from fossil fuels within 10 years through a variety of renewable energy sources. Mike Kaleikini of Puna Geothermal Venture will update the audience on its power purchase agreement with Hawaii Electric Light Co. It already delivers 2530 megawatts of power on a continuous basis to the Big Island.
The public is invited to attend the summit, which takes place in the Hawaii National Guard Training Center auditorium and dining center, located outside the Bellows security gate.
For more information, call Ryan’s office at 587-8388.
