Through the vision of a “self-funded nonprofit,” more than 100 students at Hauula Elementary School are receiving the gift of a desktop computer this week.

Hauula acting principal Sam Izumi said the school linked up with Hawaiian Hope through its partnership with Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center, after expressing concern that the students needed better preparation for the transition to intermediate school.

“Having better access to computers means further educational opportunities at home, outside of school,” Izumi said, “and better achievement in school. It gives them a leg up.”

Hawaiian Hope was to deliver 105 computers to the school May 9 in an evening program that includes a training class for parents on how to set them up at home for their children’s use and allay any fears of the technology.

“These computers are not on loan, but a personal gift for students to keep, learn, have fun with and enjoy at home,” explained HH executive director Curtis Kropar, whose business provides technology services to nonprofits and has put donated computers into the hands of more than 600 people in five years.

“Nowadays,” Kropar states on the group’s website, “school children are routinely assigned homework with the assumption they have a computer at home and Internet access whenever they want.”

He has found, however, that for hundreds of Island children - either homeless or living in economically depressed areas - that’s not the case.
