Kahuku High and Intermediate School has renamed its health and learning center The Geraldine Meade Health Learning Center after a well-loved, longtime educator who passed away last June.

Meade taught at KHIS for many years, concentrating her time in P.E. and health courses. She also served on the North Shore Neighborhood Board and was instrumental in founding Koolauloa Community Health and Wellness Center, a nonprofit that offers health care and information to the poor, uninsured, underinsured and homeless.

The school’s health center, meanwhile, offers classes on anatomy, health nutrition and physiology to students. It also has nurse’s aide training, where students learn how to properly check vital signs, temperature, blood pressure and pulse rates.

“We also branch out to different areas of health, such as radiology, physical therapy and social work, so students can take courses that will help their health career pathway,” explained district education specialist Deborah Voorhies.

The center conducted its first health fair May 2 under its new name in cooperation with the Koolauloa center, offering booths, exhibits and activities promoting health and nutrition education, blood drive recruitment, sun safety tips, body fat analysis, health screenings and much more for all ages.

This is the first of what could become many events to be held in honor of Meade and everything she did for the Kahuku community.
