Those passing by Kawainui Model Airplane Field on Kapaa Quarry Road may be forgiven for thinking World War II has returned to the island. Fear not: The Zeros, Spitfires, Corsairs and Mustangs zipping over Kailua Saturday are just taking part in the RC Plane Combat Contest.
Organizers are expecting about 15 of Oahu’s best radio-control pilots to test their dog-fighting skills against one another in planes modeled after Allied and Axis powers. Contest director and P-51 Mustang pilot Christopher Sullivan said keeping the planes off the deck and safely away from each other is a challenge.
“We fly somewhere around the 100 miles-perhour range,” he said, “and there are plenty of crashes and mid-air collisions. The last contest we had, I think we had six or seven crashs.”

Each plane will have a 30-foot-long shimmer attached to its tail. The objective is for a plane to cut the ribbon from its opponent’s rotor or wing. A cut shimmer indicates a kill. Competing pilots will fly at least four times before finalists are determined and will have five minutes for each round to score as many kills as possible.
The flying begins at 9 a.m. with the finals coming some time after noon. The public is welcome at the free event.
