Windward Mall’s effort to become a true dining attraction got another boost with the May 18 opening of Gyu-Kaku restaurant.

Owner Lyle Matsuoka, who teamed with Ruby Tuesday owners Ted Davenport and Rick Nakashima to bring the famed Japanese barbecue spot to Kaneohe, said the improvements made the location particularly interesting.

“They have done a lot of work on the mall so it’s a more attractive experience. Almost every weekend they have an activity.”

He also believes the type of dining Gyu-Kaku offers will help make the restaurant a spot for more than just hungry shoppers. “At Ruby Tuesdays we were able to create a destination restaurant, and we think GyuKaku will be the same. We really liked the concept. It’s exciting and we really think we can grow it. It’s kind of a trendy, hip place to go. You cook your own food so it’s very interactive, very social. “

The Windward Mall restaurant - on the lower level near Zale’s - will offer items not found on Gyu-Kaku menus in other locations. They have added six appetizers, brought in their own poke recipe plus new desserts (including deep-fried cheesecake) to go along with Yakimochi ice cream, s’mores, GyuKaku ice cream and chocolate pecan turtle cake.

Gyu-Kaku is open from 11 a.m. to midnight and does not take reservations. Call 744-2157.
