Kahaluu United Methodist Church will mark its 80th year with about 200 members and friends for worship, stories and food this Saturday at Kahaluu Elementary School, across Waihee Road from its modest buildings.

To church families and other invited guests, Rev. Bob Nakata and lay leader Sakae Loo stated that they hope to “rekindle the warm fellowship with old and new friends, and to appreciate the many blessings we have enjoyed as a community.”

The church was established by Rev. Chinpei Peter Goto, who also helped found the Kailua and Benjamin Parker United Methodist churches. In Kahaluu, the church began as the social center of a farming community of mostly Okinawan families. It grew to play a vital role in building a healthy community and is now actively involved in food distribution (with KEY Project), caring for the homeless and broader concerns through Faith Action for Community Equity.

“Rev. Goto spread the gospel after a good game of baseball,” said Nakata, who was born and raised in Kahaluu, “and he served the people with kindness and care. We look forward to continuing the ministry of caring for many decades to come.”
