Kahuku Medical Center recently showcased its renovated emergency room to the public - a place that gets about 4,700 visits a year, 24 hour a day.

“KMC clearly appreciates the benefits of our ER renovation,” said administrator Lance Segawa. “The upgrades are welcomed by both patients and staff.”

Among the new features are the flooring, wall and corner guards, fire doors, ceiling tile, bathroom tile work, waiting-room furniture and wall decor - all completed in February through collaboration with pro bono partners such as Architects Hawaii to create a more modern, cheerful and professional ER.

The only critical-access hospital within 35 miles for Koolauloa and North Shore patients, KMC acquired its new name and nonprofit status in 2008, 80 years after opening as a plantation hospital/clinic.

It has 21 beds, 110 employees and 10 physicians.
