The DLNR and UH Sea Grant Program planners recently released a Kailua Beach and Dune Management Plan, which they collaborated on in order to identify long-term conservation options for the Kailua coastal system.

“Kailua was selected for this innovative planning effort because of its unique environment characteristics, such as the large and intact beach and dune systems,” said Sea Grant Program’s Dolan Eversole, who led the project team. “Part of the rationale behind this plan is to anticipate that the beach and dune system are very likely to change, especially considering global sea-level rise estimates.”

The plan identifies several threats to the shoreline that residents already are familiar with - continued erosion, ineffective sand management and insufficient shoreline construction setbacks. The document also suggests science-based solutions.
