Kailua Hongwanji Mission has received the go-ahead from the city to expand, and it will host a service and reception for supporters Feb. 27 to share memories of the old building and kick off fundraising for the new one.

“We got our (zone-change) permit in December, and now we’re in the design phase,“said mission president Keiji Kukino. “We hope we will be serving a community beyond our membership.” Currently the mission has about 65 families.

The Feb. 27 service begins at 9 a.m. and is open to all members and invited guests at 30 D Maluniu St. For details, call 247-5734.

Plans call for the demolition of the old temple - built for Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii in the 1950s - and the erection of a two-story main hall that would house a temple upstairs for weekly services and a multipurpose center downstairs to include an adult day care program. Ben Woo Architects is working on the final design.

The church still has about $200,000 to raise for the altar and furnishings, Kukino said, as most of the construction is paid for by a generous bequest from a member. Donations are welcome to Kailua Hongwanji at the above address.

“There will be no bon dance this summer because of construction,” he added, “but by 2012 it should be ready.”
