Aloha Aina Earth Day comes to Kailua Intermediate School from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, offering unlimited collection of computers and e-waste, as well as a wide variety of other items.
The drive is a fundraiser for Windward Boys & Girls Club, which is partnering with Ross Stores on this major cleanup. For curbside pick up, call 263-0555; for free towing of cars, call Rene Mansho at 306-1876.
Also participating are 20 recyclers and businesses and area lawmakers as well as clubhouse students and staff, which operate on the KIS campus.
“We look forward to working with Ross Stores employees, club members and parents on this project,” said Maureen Purington, Windward clubhouse director. “We received a grant from Ross Stores to run our Power Hour program (homework help and tutoring) that also included an engagement event with store employees and our youths, so this is a great opportunity for our organizations to work together to benefit the community.”
Residents can bring metal, paper, appliances and old bulky things to the school parking lot, as well as canned items for Hawaii Foodbank. Also welcome: HI-5 containers, corrugated cardboard, egg cartons, cell phones, printer cartridges, cooking oil, phone books and magazines, batteries and plastic bags.
Goodwill will accept usable clothing; Lions clubs will recycle eye glasses and hearing aids. People also may exchange two incandescent light bulbs for two CFLs. No tires, TV sets, paint, green waste, microwave ovens, motor oil, hazardous fluids or gas tanks will be accepted.
The drive is coordinated by Mansho of Schnitzer Steel, a Campbell Industrial Park metal recycler that, with others, will give its cash proceeds from recycled waste to the club.
