You can now feel like you’re in India from the comfort of a Kailua yoga studio. The heat of India is famous for helping the body stretch into supple yoga postures, and the new Kailua studio replicates those 85- to103-degree conditions.
“Most people think of Bikram Yoga when they hear ‘hot yoga,’ though my studio will be its own infusion of a variety of yoga styles complemented by the heat,” explained owner Nicole Robinson-Ague, a lifelong Kailua resident. “Oftentimes I hear these responses to Bikram Yoga:‘It’s too hot,’‘It’s too long,’ It’s too hard.’ My vision for the studio is to offer classes for everyone.”
Hot Yoga By the Sea at 320 Uluniu St., which opened its doors March 1, offers a variety of classes from hot yoga for beginners to high intensity classes for advanced students.
“The benefits of heat are numerous,” she added.“It improves circulation, delivers oxygen more effectively to the body’s muscles and organs, increases metabolism, exercises the cardiovascular system, improves concentration and determination, expels toxins in the body through sweat and much more.”
Doing yoga in the heat provides a cardiovascular workout similar to running or playing tennis, she said, and because the body is warmed up there’s less chance of pulling muscles or harming the joints. She adds that not only does hot yoga diminish strain, it also helps align the body and correct injuries.
Robinson-Ague and her team of 12 teachers (including Kailua’s Kathryn Huntsman and Rebecca Kelso) also offer non-heated classes such as meditation, ashtanga, gentle yoga flow and Zumba.
