Kaneohe Community Family Center has found a new home for itself at King Intermediate School with the help of staff, volunteers and the free services of a moving company that asked to remain anonymous.

“We have a beautiful view, plus the fan is up and the door’s painted,” said site manager Cynthia Okazaki. “Not to have to pay rent is a good thing,” she added, “because we lost a lot of grants.”

The nonprofit social service agency, affiliated with Parents and Children Together, moved at the end of May from a nearby office space to a “trailer portable” on the King campus. They’ve settled into Portable 1, past the band room at the end of the main campus drive and across from the ‘Olelo studio.

Like nearly all other Hawaii nonprofits, budget cuts are now a grim fact of life for KCFC, which lost one staffer at the end of June and is making do with five employees not all of them full time.

The center opened in 1995 and at one time had 11 on staff. It works to link families with resources and referrals, co-sponsors service projects, community programs and family workshops in Kaneohe. It also is a member of Community Works in 96744, a coalition of organizations working to strengthen area families and prevent underage drinking.

KCFC’s former homes were at Windward Business Center, Heeia elementary and Ben Parker elementary schools. The phone number remains the same, 2477747.
