It’s August, which is when Kaneohe residents start asking: “When’s the Christmas parade?”

Now in her 15th year of helping coordinate the largest community-based parade on the island, 2011 chairwoman Kuulei Olsen Richardson has nearly all the answers already, from T-shirts, to entries, to start time (9 a.m. Dec. 3).

“We’re the largest community-based parade in Hawaii,” Richardson said proudly, adding that this year’s theme is “Kaneohe Dreams Come True.” Leading the 49th annual march will be grand marshal Lea Albert, DOE superintendent of the Castle-Kahuku Complex schools.

Applications will be ready by Sept. 1, and can be picked up at Merle Norman Cosmetics Studio at Windward Mall. Deadline to sign up is Nov. 10.

Richardson also meets with her committee of volunteers at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Windward Church of the Nazarene, second floor (45-232 Puaae Road), and the public is welcome to attend and contribute. One open job: Someone to be in charge of refreshments at Castle High at the end the march. To offer help, call her at 348-2749.

“I’ve always been the ‘under person’ before, so I really appreciate what Art did,” admitted the retired schoolteacher. “All the small things I’m learning to deal with them.” (Longtime parade chairman Art Machado is ill and unable to chair the march this year.)

Parade T-shirt pre-sale orders ($2 discount for 10 or more) will run from Sept. 1 to Oct. 10. Proceeds help with parade costs. For more information, call Anne Bower at 235-3883.

Still ahead are plans for the Kaneohe City Lights block party Nov. 26 at the civic center, a possible light parade at Windward Mall, and a logo design contest for the T-shirts.
