Kawainui’s Native Plant Tour

‘Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi will conduct a tour at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to showcase the native plants of Kawainui.

The four-hour tour will include visits to the two special areas of the marsh that ‘Ahahui oversees and maintains. The Ulupo heiau has been undergoing ethnobotanical restoration, and Na Pohaku o Hauwahine is a native forest and wetland restoration area. Last year alone the group’s conservation efforts including the planting of 500 native plants.


Rick Barboza of Hui Ku Maoli Ola native plant nursery will lead the tour, which includes visits to the nursery and to Kawainui Park native garden.

‘Ahahui offers about 10 themed tours a year. The nonprofit, Kailua-based conservation group has been working to restore the cultural, natural features of Kawainui Marsh for the past 13 years, explained administrator Ka’imi Scudder. “We have a curatorship agreement with the state Parks Division at Ulupo Heiau and Na Pohaku o Hauwahine, but it’s all bare bones in terms of our support level from the state.”
