Alice Hewett takes over leadership of Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club this year, while the group’s former president, Mahealani Cypher, moves on to lead the Oahu Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.

In her new role, Cypher will oversee a council of 26 clubs on the island. She is a Kaneohe resident and former Honolulu City Clerk.

The club took first place in the 2010 Kaneohe Christmas Parade and has completed its 2011 calendar, which residents can buy for $5 by calling 235-8111. Sponsored by Hawaiian Electric Co., it features color photos of all ahupua’a in the moku of Ko’olaupoko with stories about each one.

The Ko’olaupoko club was established in 1937, and soon after that Hewett’s relatives began a tradition of serving the local civic club, which includes land divisions from Heeia to Kualoa. Known to Windward families, park users and young athletes as “Auntie Alice,” Hewett has been active in the Police Activities League and many other area groups. She also is the mother of award-winning kumu hula and singer Frank Hewett.

Members currently are deep into taro restoration plans for the Haiku wetlands and are compiling a book about Kaneohe’s distinguished kamaaina. The club also sponsors regular hikes and work projects for the public and awards yearly college scholarships.
