While Hawaii’s weather remains generally static, the best way to tell that seasons have changed is when Lanikai’s craft fairs set up shop each winter and spring, attracting thousands of people to the otherwise quiet neighborhood.

The Lanikai Spring Craft Faire is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at Lanikai Park, serving as one of the community’s major fundraisers with more than 100 vendors set up near the intersection of Aalapapa and Kaiolena drives.

One of the event’s draws is that all vendors must sell items that are made in Hawaii. “This gives an opportunity for local artists to share their craft,” said Deborah Jadrnicek who with husband Rik are co-chairing the yearly festival that has been a community mainstay since 1988.

Lanikai Association uses proceeds to improve and maintain its facilities, including the park’s landscaped playground, basketball court, pavilion and long house. The foundation was established in 1930 when the area was primarily for farming. As one of the longest-standing community organizations on the Windward side, its contributions to the community have allowed other groups such as Lanikai Canoe Club and Girl Scout Troop 179 to thrive while, themselves, giving back to the neighborhood.

It’s also an excellent time to find last-minute Mother’s Day gifts. For more information, call 261-0183.
