The latest exhibit at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden may satisfy your craving for art and nature. The Lauren/Warren Show, named after artists Lauren Okano and Warren Stenberg, is open now through July 31, with an artists reception set for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the park gallery.
“There will be approximately 60 works in a variety of mediums and sizes,” said Stenberg, a longtime Windward resident. “Many contain an oriental flavor and much color. I can assure you, it will not be boring!”
The show was inspired by master artist Harry Tsuchidana under whom Okano and Stenberg studied in 1996 at Honolulu Academy of Arts. Years later and the two have teamed up to honor their abstract-painting teacher with their contemporary works which include oils, acrylics, enhanced macro digital photo images and monoprints. Tsuchidana also will attend the reception.
Okano spent time in Japan studying calligraphy, and she is an instructor at the art academy and a member of Windward Artists Guild.
A fellow WAG member and its past president, Stenberg said Ho’omaluhia holds special meaning for him: His first solo show opened there in 1995 and he has been exhibiting his work there nearly every year since. His work has won numerous awards in juried exhibitions and appears in galleries locally, on the Mainland and internationally. Stenberg creations also have appeared on TV shows and in movies, including several Hawaii Five-0 episodes and the yet-to-be-released The Descendants, filmed on-island and starring George Clooney.
The gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. For more on both artists, visit their websites: laurenokanoart.com and warrenstenberg.com. For park details, call 233-7323.
