Hui o Koolaupoko invites residents to join its Hakipuu Watershed Walk from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, meeting first at the Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery warehouse at 46-403 Haiku Road (via the end of Kuneki Street).

Fee is $10, and hikers should come prepared for strenuous walking through uneven terrain and mud, following a trail through Kualoa Ranch property.

Designed to help communities become more familiar with the ahupua’a, the walk will point out the cultural and ecological highlights and what actions are needed to improve the health of the Hakipuu stream system.

“We’ll visit the mouth of Hakipu’u Stream, historic lo’i sites within the valley, current restoration projects in the mauka region and enjoy scenic views of Kaneohe Bay,” said Kristen Nalani Mailheau, coordinator for the nonprofit group.

She noted that Hakipuu resident Ian Masterson, teacher of surf science, culture and technology at WCC and HPU, will join the walk and share his knowledge. Topics include makai stream connections, mauka origins of streams, historic and cultural significance, native and invasive species, water quality and more.
