Editor,

Aloha! Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii’s mission is to inspire local communities to care for their coastlines through hands-on beach cleanups in the Hawaiian Islands. That’s why we feel that we should share with you what Waimanalo and fellow community members accomplished May 7.

Despite bad weather, 123 volunteers congregated at Makapu’u Beach Park to do a thorough and inventoried beach cleanup. Highlights include 2,964 cigarette butts, 1,047 bottle caps and lids, 1,610 pieces of plastic, and the list goes on and on. Our main sponsors were Sea Life Park, Sweet Home Waimanalo, God’s Country Waimanalo, Patagonia, Quiksilver, Hurley, NOAA, Olukai, C4Waterman, Wahoo’s and the city.

We hope that you can share this information with the public to assist us in raising awareness and promoting more volunteers for our next beach cleanup, set for July 10 at Kailua Beach Park.

You can read more and see pictures at our website, sustainablecoastlineshawaii.org.
