Master Carvers, Music Saturday At WCC Fest

The inaugural Kumu A’o Festival (“learning from the source”) will offer a day of cultural enlightenment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Windward Community College’s Hale Akoakoa Atrium and Lanai.
The festival honors the work and influence of master sculptor/carver Tui’one Pulotu and other prominent cultural practitioners who will be on hand to demonstrate various techniques and traditions in a series of mini workshops.
Scheduled to demonstrate their unique skills are Pulotu (images of Ku), Gordon Umialiloalahanauokalakaua “Umi” Kai (fish hooks), Bernice Akamine (kapa dye); and Keola Chan, Kapuaihooleiiaikapono “Kapono” Aluli Souza, and Enrick Ortiz (lomilomi). Windward artist Meleanna Meyer will offer a hands-on Open Art Studio.
Sharing talk story and entertainment will be Jerry Santos and Hoku Zuttermeister.
