Castle High School will host a drug awareness brief-ing for parents, educators and the public at 6 p.m. March 31 in the cafeteria, featuring drug displays and discussion by Keith Kamita, deputy director of law enforcement for the state Department of Public Safety.

Light refreshments will be served at the free public event. To register, call Kaneohe Community Facility Center at 235-7747 or e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Kamita has more than 25 years’ experience in narcotics units and spent 17 of them as head of the DPS Narcotics Enforcement Division.

“The importance of this presentation is to tell the audience what to watch out for, what drugs look like. We will even bring the drugs for them to look at and feel,” he said. “We have different facets of interaction we are going to display such as powerpoint slides, videos, and touch-and-feel displays. When parents come to learn and understand the paraphernalia, then they’ll know what to watch out for.”

Awareness is increasingly important as new strains and adaptations of common drugs are being created and fused into the public, he noted. There’s a new strain of marijuana, for example, called ‘spice’ or ‘K2’, which is made of synthetic THC drugs.

“Another drug we need to be wary of is ‘ivory wave’ or ‘bath salt.’ These are hallucinogens sold as bath salts and are ingested either by snorting or smoking. It is actually legal in some states, but is illegal here in Hawaii.

“For the kids, they have to be able to say and think that when they get tempted to try something they know is bad for them, they should know why it is bad for them,” he added.
