Del.icio.usThe Windward Neighborhood Security Watch is partnering with law enforcement for a meeting at 9 a.m.
Saturday at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden on “Trauma and Stress.”
Dr. Mike Noghrey and retired Honolulu firefighter and Windward resident Mark Yeager will discuss and share handouts on how to respond to trauma while waiting for help and ways to stay calm. They’ll also offer tips on decompressing afterwards.
“If you’re home or traveling somewhere and something happens and you’re waiting for the first responders to get there, what should you do, what shouldn’t you do?” said NSW president Carlene MacPherson. “Whenever I’ve responded to these types of things, I’m fine in the middle of it, but afterwards I just melt right into the sidewalk - so how do you take care of yourself and what to do after you’ve been there with all of that adrenaline going through your body?”
The men also will cover health topics including proper nutrition and exercise. For more information, call police Sgt. Duane Samson at 723-8874.
NSW group’s next meeting in May will focus on disaster training, MacPherson noted.
“Officer Leland Cadoy from Waikiki will bring his disaster training program over to the Windward side,” she said. “I used to walk the streets of Waikiki with the Citizens Patrol group, and he’s the one who trained me.
“His disaster training is great; he makes you think outside the box. What would you do if you were out shopping in Waikiki or you were at the zoo today and you heard the disaster sirens go off? He presents those types of scenarios to you.”
