The commute between Laie and Kahuku is now a bit safer for walkers and bicyclists, thanks to a new 1.5-mile bike path.

The Malaekahana Bike and Pedestrian Path, which runs between the Kahawainui and Malaekahana bridges, officially opened March 19 with a blessing and plaque dedication near Gunstock Ranch Road.

Residents and community groups took part in the six-month long project, volunteering Saturday mornings to help landowner and sponsor Hawaii Reserves Inc. see it through to completion. Joining HRI in the endeavor were Laie Community Association, Kahuku Community Asso-ciation, Operating Engineers Local Union 3 and local businesses.

“It was wonderful to see members of our community work side by side to create something together that will be used and cherished by many generations to come,” said LCA president Pane Meatoga of the eight-foot wide path that runs along Kamehameha highway, about 15 feet inland.

The project is part of Envision Laie, representing Laie, Kahuku, Hauula and Koolauloa residents and landowners, and is in keeping with the city master plan that calls for bicycle-friendly neighborhoods.
