Since its establishment in 1961, the Olomana community has grown and expanded from a few dozen homes to now more than 300. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the community, and neighbors will celebrate Saturday with a block party.
“Our pride in our community and our community spirit” is what Earl Walker, Olomana Community Association president, believes makes Olomana different from other communities. The growth of the community can be attributed to the area’s physical beauty, but more importantly, to the companionship and service of its residents.
The party will run from 4 to 8 p.m. and is for OCA members only. Ulupii Street will be blocked off as well as all traffic lanes and sidewalk areas from Ulukanu Street to Uluhala Street.
The OCA began in 1963, and over the years, it has remained unified by involving residents in various activities and holiday traditions. The association, for example, works with Maunawili Elementary School to support and uphold a safe environment for children, and it also hosts parties at Easter, Halloween and Christmas.
“(The purpose of the association) was to recognize community needs and develop ways and means of fulfilling them, either through its own efforts or in cooperation with other agencies and organizations,” explained Walker in a recent community’s newsletter, which has been published for more than 40 years. “(The association also) encourages active participation by the members and the public in all projects, which contribute to economic, social and civic betterment.”
