The Kaneohe Police Activities League (PAL) is registering youths for basketball and kalo farming this month.
Kalo farming?
“The Lo’i Project will be a collaborative effort between the Honolulu Police Department and the Kaneohe community,” said David Kauahi, head of community affairs for PAL. “Volunteer project leaders will be a mixture of Kanekoa Schultz, Aunty Alice Hewett and Beverlynne Howard, plus a few students from the UH School of Hawaiian Knowledge.”
Kauahi explained that the inaugural project could be continued all year and through harvest time, as an alternative activity between other PAL sports. For now, however, the trial period will be four months of work and learning for free at the Heeia lo’i, which is located mauka of King Intermediate School. Children ages 9 to 17 are the targeted taro cultivators, and farming activities “through traditional methodology” will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays.
Basketball and farming signups are being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in September at Heeia Community Park. Co-ed basketball signups continue on weekends in October.
