The state DOE honored two outstanding Windward district employees this fall through its Incentive and Service Awards program.

Kahaluu Elementary School’s Nicholas Aiello, a behavioral health specialist, and William Craddick, librarian at Olomana School, were among those lauded for demonstrating excellence in practice over a 12-month period in the public schools.

Aiello was named 2011 DOE Employee of the Year. A state worker for six years, he’s regarded as not only supportive and helpful in the classroom, but also for taking time to assist students outside of school. Principal Naomi Matsuzaki calls him “very hard-working, very caring of all the students, and very involved in school and community issues.”

Aiello chaired Kahaluu’s School Community Council and educated students about sustainable living and energy efficiency, One visible result was the installation of recycling bins around campus.

“I was extremely honored to be the Windward District candidate, knowing how many dedicated individuals I work with,” he said. “It was great to see other people at the ceremony who were individually doing unique and fantastic things to benefit children in Hawaii.”

Craddick earned a Sustained Superior Performance Award. A state employee for seven years, his determination to instill a love of reading in students is what drove him to prepare new books for both students and staff and to implement a reading program at the alternative school. Craddick also initiated a reading database, so Olomana could track progress in students’ reading gains.

Aiello also received a Sustained Superior Performance Award at the ceremony, which was held Sept. 15 at the state capitol.
