Techies, geeks and fans of all things electronic rejoice: Unconferenz returns Saturday to Windward Community College, satisfying your desire to mingle with like-minded friends and share information about the latest technical innovations.

The free event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will cover hobby robotics, HTML 5, geolocation, Quantified Self, hackerspace, Android app development, Hawaii iPhone apps and more. The final list of 15 topics will not be determined until the morning of the event.

Unlike most conferences where you sit in a chair and listen to someone drone on about a certain topic, an unconferenz turns the tables and puts the attendees in charge of the discussion, according to organizer Burt Lum, who also co-hosts HPR’s Bytemarks Cafe.

“In most conferences you attend it as a passive participant,” Lum explained. “When you go to an unconferenz, everybody is a peer and everybody goes to the session fully prepared to participate.

“The hope is that we can connect those people, and they can either learn from each other or perhaps take a project to another level or collaborate on something that wasn’t even thought of before.”

While techies will be most prominent, Lum said the sessions are welcoming to those who have more interest than expertise on the topics.“Let’s say you are interested in social media but you haven’t gotten too deep into Twitter and Facebook, you’re more than welcome to come and ask the question, ‘How do I make best use of Twitter?’ and the people there will definitely help answer that question.”

Lum can answer a few questions himself. He earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering at Stanford and spent a year at the Maui Supercomputer.

To register, go to unconferenz2011.eventbright.com. Lum has reserved three rooms at the college, and attendance is limited to 150 people.
