Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club recently gave grants of $750 to Starla Frost, Brittney Like, ‘Ihilani Cummings, Sharmayne Kamaka and Charles Amoy.

The club raises scholarship funds via several events, such as its “Renewable Treasures” garage sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday at Kaneohe’s Atrium building parking lot.

“Our recipients impressed the committee with their academic excellence, strong personal recommendations, hours of community service and personal essays, and fields of study that will benefit the Hawaiian community in the future,” explained Cindy Turse, head of the education and scholarship committee.

Cummings, for example, is pursuing her Ph.D. at Capella University, studying public safety and specializing in criminal justice. She also works at the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility.

Amoy just graduated from Castle High and plans to study engineering at UH Manoa. Frost, a mother of three, is studying organizational change at HPU. Kamaka is a Certified Nurse Aide who will attend Kapiolani Community College’s nursing school in the fall. Like just graduated from Kamehameha and will study biology at Azusa Pacific University.

The scholarship is open to high school graduates and students at any accredited school of higher education. Preference is given to Native Hawaiians who live in Windward Oahu.

This weekend’s sale offers household items, electronic equipment, books, toys, clothes, tools and plants, along with baked goods and a plate lunch special.

“It’s a community treasure hunt to benefit deserving students,” added member Janine Tully. To donate items, call 235-8111.
