Hidden away all quiet and contemplative for seven years on the second floor of Aikahi Park Shopping Center, a group of serious meditators is taking one of its programs to the more visible Kailua beach on Sundays.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 2, instructors from Kailua Shambhala Meditation Center will set up cushions and a tarp for a free weekly morning of Meditation on the Beach.

“Mindfulness is somewhat the rage now, being used in health care, education and the military,” explained Dean Nelson, Shambhala trainer, holistic health practitioner and chiropractor. “It’s a very simple form of meditation based on using the breath to learn to be present and gently train our wandering, fearful mind.”

The mind also can contemplate other classes offered indoors at various times by the center, such as Monday Night Live Talk Story with Dr. Dean, several levels of meditation, sound therapy, ikebana, and free seminars Oct. 21 and 22 with Nelson on “Tibetan Teachings on Assisting in Death and Living.”
