Mailing letters, postcards or packages would be easier if it weren’t for the packed parking lots and lines at the post office. Nook & Cranny, a house-cleaning service, has been offering a pleasant alternative to that scenario for four years at 270 Kuulei Road #105, across from the library.

“We have tons of parking, and all our pricing is the same as the post office,” said owner Candas Smiley. “We can stamp packages, we have a selection of priority shipping boxes and envelopes, and the local USPS picks up from us each day.”

In fact, it was the U.S. Postal Service’s idea for a Kailua business to become a Contracted Postal Unit, and Nook & Cranny that got the job - by default, in a sense. “There were three businesses interested,” Smiley recalled, “but we were the only one that filled out the paperwork.

“We are much different than a regular post office,” she added, warming to her favorite subject. “For seniors who have trouble packaging their boxes or writing labels, we are happy to do that, and we have sofas and even books for the kids.”

And being it’s the busy graduation season, she’s stocked up on celebratory candy leis. Nook & Cranny also collects canned goods for St. Anthony’s Outreach. Besides all that, of course, they can vacuum, mop and dust your home as well as clean up the kitchens and bathrooms. And they take credit cards.

“We have a lot of elderly clients, and it’s also convenient for busy moms or working families who do not have time. They can call on us to do the cleaning while they do a load of laundry or go to the soccer game,” said Smiley, who has been running the business for more than 20 years.

Nook & Cranny’s postal service is there as a convenience for the Kailua community, Smiley pointed out. “People have a routine, they walk by every day. Those who haven’t tried us need to come in and give it a try.”
