Family entertainment is coming to Paliku Theatre all the way from Wahiawa in the form of Camp Rock The Musical, which presents hit songs from Disney movies Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2. The show runs June 10-12 and 17-19.

The musical pits a group of summer campers in a rockin’ showdown against a flashier camp across the lake.

That’s just the kind of entertainment Diamond in the Rough Productions aspired to when it opened in 2009 with the mission to have a theater group focused on “fun, family theater performances that utilize many child actors as well as adults from all walks of life, from total beginners to industry professionals,” said artistic director and founder Kristi Kashimoto-Rowbottom, who also directs the Paliku show.

Performance Academy in Wahiawa, so when it’s time for performances they set up at various venues. The past few shows have been at Paliku - a serious commute time and commitment. “We have a cast of almost 60!” said Kashimoto Rowbottom.

“This is by far the largest cast we’ve ever had, but we had such an enormous turnout and show of talent at auditions, we just couldn’t cut it down more than that.

“We are very widespread, especially in this particular cast. We have kids from Waianae to Haleiwa, to Kailua/Kaneohe, to Hawaii Kai.”

The Windward side is represented by co-choreographer Natalie Jolly Uehara, Castle High dance instructor. Playing a lead role as sassy diva Tess is Castle alumna Krysten Kaneshiro. Also in the production are Castle’s Teresa Miller as Dana Turner (the rival camp owner’s daughter) and featured dancer Rachel Wong.

“This is a high-energy, fun show, that the kids have worked really hard to create,” noted Kashimoto-Rowbottom. “We are a young community theater and definitely need the support of our community in order to continue to produce shows that families can enjoy together.

“We hope people come out to support the kids and enjoy the show.”

The show plays at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Cost is $20 for adults, $10 for youths. A “Campfire Party Package” also is available for an additional $10, which includes a 20-minute meet-and-greet with the cast, a souvenir, and seating in the VIP section during the performance.
