A Waimanalo Community Cleanup is set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 7 at Waimanalo Beach Park, where volunteers welcome scrap metal, cell phones, computers, batteries, plastics and much more.

Coordinator Kristen Nalani Mailheau is looking for help sorting out the items that day and for members of a Street and Stream Cleanup Team to pick up litter throughout the watershed. Hui Malama O Ke Kai students will spend winter break surveying the community for areas needing help.

Hui O Ko’olaupoko and Oahu Resource Conservation & Development Council are partners in this third annual effort, and they hope to surpass last year’s haul of 17,000 pounds of scrap metal, 100 tires, three roll-off bins of trash and bulky items and five pallets of electronic waste.

Local lawmakers are involved, along with Schnitzer Steel, the city, state Department of Health, Waimanalo Agriculture Association, Castle Medical Center, Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery, Pioneer Hi-Bred, Sweet Home Waimanalo, Keneke’s and Hawaii Job Corps.

Redeemable items also include cardboard, newspaper, TV sets (one per household), phonebooks. HI-5 containers, eyeglasses, usable clothing and canned goods for Hawaii Foodbank.

For more information, or to arrange for a curbside pickup, call Mailheau at 381-7202.
