The “Voice of the Watershed” marks Earth Month with a benefit concert at 10 p.m. April 30 at the new Hard Rock Cafe on Beachwalk Avenue in Waikiki, featuring Sub Pop recording artists Fruit Bats and local musician Tavana.

Using a variety of volunteer projects, fundraising, environmental data research and public education, the nonprofit Hui o Ko’olaupoko is committed to protecting and restoring ocean health, and the concert will help.

“We were part of a benefit concert in February 2010, and what we learned is that talented musicians and worthy causes make for great events,” said HOK executive director Todd Cullison.

Tickets (for 21 and over) cost $16.50 presale and $20 at the door. Larger donations and sponsors are welcome. The hui also invites the public to its ocean and stream-health work parties during the year. In 2010, for example, it coordinated more than 1,600 residents who gave 5,000 volunteer hours to planting trees, monitoring water quality and raising awareness.

“These events allow participants to use various equipment and different methods to determine the quality of streams and beach water,” Cullison added. “Perhaps more important, it teaches them why our island’s water is degraded and ways in which individuals can improve and protect the resources.”
