The Windward Ho’olaulea comes early this year, with a day full of fun, food and exhibits set for Oct. 1 at Windward Community College. The free community celebration will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the campus grounds, with the addition of award-winning films documenting the culture of hula.

Counting on a successful community celebration is Kaneohe Business Group, which funds scholarships for WCC students with proceeds from the event. This summer the group awarded $1,000 grants to 15 students; last year a total of $21,000 was given out.

Flagship sponsors of the 2011 ho’olaulea are Ameron Hawaii, HECO, Le Jardin Academy and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs “because they believe in and support promoting culture and education,” said Bonnie Beatson, a spokeswoman for the college and the business group.

The 2011 scholarship recipients are LeslieAnn Baker, Jamie Carey, Mary Ann Crowell, Cory Dias, Anuhea Jumawan, Michael Leary, Prestina Louis, Matthew Maneha, Heidi Matthews, tremendous community support of this event. It’s a way to highlight the talent and businesses of the Windward side as well as the educational opportunities at WCC.”

Vendor applications are still being accepted for the event, which also offers cultural demonstrations, ceramics and orchid sales, raku firing, face painting, math activities, college and career information, a silent auction, free blood pressure readings and Gallery ‘Iolani’s “Matali’i” art exhibit of contemporary Maori art.
