WCC To Sharpen Youth Career Skills

Windward and Leeward community colleges are the selected pilot sites for the Ready, Set, Grow Hawaii (RSG HI) program. The two community colleges will host open houses for the program in July and August.

RSG HI is a free collegeand career-readiness program. The UH community colleges and the state Department of Labor teamed up to start the program, which targets young adults who lack reading, math and workreadiness skills and do not have a high school credential. The program aims to close the community’s work-readiness gap and help students acquire basic skills necessary for employment and entrance to college. RSG HI will be implemented across the state by 2014 and provide learning opportunities to an estimated 5,500 students.

RSG HI is funded through multiple grants with the Hawaii Community Foundation being one of them. The RSG HI program extends its services to people of all ages and specifically aims to help high school dropouts. However, people who have earned a GED or Competency Based Adult Secondary Education Diploma also are welcome to join the program and develop better academic and work skills.

Open houses featuring informational workshops and counseling sessions are planned from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 4 at WCC, and July 14 and Aug. 11 at LCC. Applications will be taken on those dates.
