A new stewardship volunteer program has opened at Hanauma Bay for youths ages 16 to 21. Training sessions meet Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, starting today (June 15).

“The stewardship program puts forth the idea of getting people to begin to care for their environment,” said Hanauma Bay Education Program leader Elizabeth Kumabe. “We’ve been trying to think of different opportunities we can offer our residents and ways we can start to invite our local population back to Hanauma Bay. This isn’t just a tourist place. It really is a park and a resource to be enjoyed by everyone, which includes our residents.

“One of the things Hanauma is focused toward is how to be in your ocean coastal areas and not have a big impact, to really walk lightly. So it kind of begged for a stewardship education opportunity.”

The Education Program is administered by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program and has provided ongoing opportunities for students to engage in service learning at the park. With service learning, students learn about coastal plants and marine debris, and they get involved with landscaping and weeding.

The stewardship program is an offshoot of service learning
