Softball Knights’ Young Veterans Relish 2011 Possibilities

Del.icio.usThe by-product of playing a lot of young players at once can be a more seasoned team during their senior year. That should be the case for Castle High junior softball player Brooke Kaululaau and her Knights.
With most of the lineup back for at least another year, and in the case of Brittany Hawn, back for two more seasons, it makes sense for the Knights to look to 2011 as their year. With a solid OIA Red season nearly behind them (they went 6-2 in their first eight games), however, Castle is considered a contender for 2011.
The Knights close out their season at 10 a.m. Saturday when they host Roosevelt in a doubleheader, and the outcome should also impact the seedings for next week’s OIA post-season tournament.
On the eve of last week-end’s doubleheader with Kaimuki, Kaululaau took some time away from the softball field to answer some questions for MidWeek‘s Windward Islander.
With such a young team, you have a chance to win a lot of games. What would be the ultimate accomplish-ment with this team? Winning a state championship. It’s a goal we’ve had ever since our freshman year for five of us (Leisha Li’ili’i, Kaisha Dacosin, Macey Moe and Kaitlyn Wils, now of Kapolei High). We all work hard, and that’s our main goal every day when we push ourselves.
What areas of your game did you focus on in the off-season? My batting. Because of the other sports I play (basketball, cheerleading), my hitting is not in sync when the season starts. This past off-season I tried to work on my hitting so I could just fine tune it during the season.
Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life? My mom (Lisa). She is my best friend. Whenever I need encouragement or someone to talk to, she’s the one who always has my back.
What Internet site do you frequent the most? Google - for school-related stuff.
What is your least-favorite household chore? Taking out the rubbish. I have to walk outside of the house to the garbage can. Once a day, after dinner, I do it. I trade chores with my brother (Kainalu) every week.
What’s your earliest sports-related memory? Always eating snacks. I played on a tee-ball team, coached by my mom and dad, and the parent of another coach used to always bring fruit platters. We used to eat that on water breaks.
What movie could you watch over and over? I don’t really have a favorite movie - I like all kinds of movies. I watch adventure movies like Ninja Assassin. I watch movies more for what they’re about.
Who is your most competitive teammate at Castle practices? Brittany Hawn. She has a lot of self-motivation, and she sets high goals for herself. She’s never down, even if she isn’t having a good day herself, and always encourages us every day, trying to pick us up.
What’s in your iPod? R&B! - and Hawaiian.
What is your favorite hangout on the island? With my family.
Do you play video games?
No, not really - except Bat Man and Robin with the kids (relatives) on XBox.
Are you a neat freak or messy? I have my days when I’m a clean freak, and I have my days when I don’t really care.
If you could had your pick, what celebrity would you choose as your prom date? Paul Walker. I like his (blue) eyes and he has nice, straight teeth.
You’re stuck on the island of Kahoolawe. You can have an endless supply of one food. What would it be? Homemade chocolate cake. I can bake it myself.
