This week we celebrate MidWeek‘s 25th anniversary with a look back at fashions from the year it was born - 1984.

When I think about the 1980s, so many stores, big and small, come to mind. Unfortunately, many are no longer here, such as Woolworth’s and Gem.

I remember some of my mom’s favorites (as I was only 6 at the time) were Carol & Mary, Liberty House, JC Penney and McInerny (where MidWeek publisher Ron Nagasawa, associate editor Steve Murray and I once worked).

But thankfully there are some retailers from that era still here today, such as Tori Richard, Kahala Sportswear, IOLANI (formerly Iolani Sportswear), Princess Kaiulani Fashions and Crazy Shirts (another company I once worked for).

We asked them to dig up some photos from 1984, and here’s what they found. Trends and designs have obviously changed, but they still do it “island-style.”
